In January 2018 the IT Infrastructure Strategy was approved by the MAG board to further provide for growth in the operation and new Data Centre Facilities were commissioned. Initially MAG intended to create a 'new build' facility however, the design team proposed utilising the now redundant original airport 'Fire Station' as possible alternative. This had gravitas as the empty building was a historical reference of the airport development and the Data Centre usage represented a meaningful and appropriate way of maintaining the redundant 1960’s Fire Station. IMUS developed a concept feasibility that was approved and led to the detailed design of an uptime institute Tier 3 standard IT Data Centre.
In November 2022 the final RIBA Stage 4 Design was approved for construction and the works commenced on site. The existing fire station roof was completely refurbished to provide a water tight interior for the new facility comprising a Data Hall and Plant room fed by a new external plant compound and substation.
The highly technical facility required precision performance to meet the exacting requirements of the Data equipment including, the provision of an air tight facility for the gaseous suppression system and a control environment to accommodate the high temperature and humidity levels.
